Description

By Robert H. Moore II

During the American Civil War, Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County stood symbolically as the “Gibraltar of the Shenandoah” in the face of Federal forces determined to occupy this critical hub for Confederate activities in the Shenandoah Valley. Though occupied briefly by Federal forces in June of 1864, the area remained free of Union forces for much of the war until being burned by Gen. Philip Sheridan in the fall of 1864. The last major action in the Valley occurred here in March 1865.

Through its eleven chapters, Gibraltar of the Shenandoah gives the reader an opportunity to drive past nearly one hundred different historic sites, buildings, and roadways; all of which have been woven together in a series of tours that offers a unique visual and interpretive experience.
