Since 1964, the Augusta County Historical Society has worked to preserve and disseminate the history of this important Virginia county that once stretched to the Mississippi River.
The work of the Society includes educational programming and outreach, operating an archives and library for preservation and research use, creating historical exhibits, supporting the creation of historic districts, documenting cemeteries, erecting historic highway markers, documenting local landmarks, and publishing items of historical interest.
We host several programs throughout the year, including two annual meetings in the spring and fall where we highlight a topic of historical significance at locations throughout the county, regular author talks and book signings, two guided Thornrose Cemetery tours in the spring and fall (Conversations from the Grave and Shadows, Secrets, and Sin: The Dark Side of Thornrose ), and our annual Gifts of History Holiday shop in November and December.
Our work is carried out through generous donations and support from our community members.
